AI search visibility means whether tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews actually mention your business when someone asks a relevant question. It’s separate from your Google ranking. You can rank on page one and still be invisible to AI search, because these tools don’t rank pages, they pick the best answer and quote it directly. Here’s how to check where you stand, and what to fix first.

Why This Matters Now (Even If You’ve Never Heard of GEO)

The overlap between Google’s top ten results and what AI engines actually cite has fallen below 20%. That means the work you’ve already put into ranking on Google doesn’t automatically carry over. A separate set of rules decides whether ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions your business by name, and most small businesses have no idea whether they’re on the right side of that line.

You don’t need to become an expert in this overnight. But if a potential customer is now asking an AI tool “who’s a good [your service] near me” instead of typing it into Google, you want a fighting chance of being in that answer.

How to Check If Your Business Shows Up in AI Search

This takes ten minutes and no technical skills.

  1. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI mode.
  2. Ask it a question a real customer would ask. Not your business name, the actual problem. For example: “who does outsourced marketing for small businesses in the UK” rather than “PlugIt Studio.”
  3. Read the answer. Are you mentioned? Are your competitors? Is anyone mentioned?
  4. Try two or three variations of the question, phrased the way a real person would type or say them.

If you don’t appear at all, you’re not being penalised, you’re just not visible yet. That’s fixable. If a competitor appears and you don’t, that’s useful intelligence, not a crisis.

The 5 Most Common Reasons Small Business Sites Are Invisible

Understanding AI Search Visibility

  1. Robots.txt is accidentally blocking AI crawlers Many sites block AI bots by accident, usually through a security plugin or blanket rule added years ago for unrelated reasons. If GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are blocked, those tools simply can’t read your site at all.
  2. Pages don’t give a direct answer near the top AI tools look for a clear, confident answer early in the content. If your homepage or service page opens with a paragraph about your company history before it says what you actually do and for whom, that’s a problem.
  3. Content has gone stale AI tools favour information that’s current. A blog post or service page that hasn’t been touched in over a year signals lower trust than one with a recent, visible update date.
  4. No structured data or FAQ markup Structured data helps AI tools understand what your page is actually about, rather than guessing from the surrounding text. It’s a technical fix, but a simple one.
  5. Not indexed on Bing ChatGPT’s search function leans heavily on Bing’s index, not just Google’s. If you’ve only ever submitted your sitemap to Google Search Console, there’s a real gap here.

What to Fix First

Don’t try to solve all five at once. Start here:

  • Check your robots.txt. This is a five-minute check that can undo years of content work if it’s wrong.
  • Rewrite the opening of your two or three most important pages so they state clearly, in the first few lines, what you do and who it’s for.
  • Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools. Most small businesses have never done this.

Everything else, structured data, deeper content refreshes, is worth doing, but these three will move the needle fastest for the effort involved.

Does optimising for AI search hurt my Google ranking?

No. The things that help AI tools understand your site, clear writing, accurate information, a logical structure, are the same things that help traditional SEO. There’s no trade-off.

How often should I update my content for this to work?

There’s no fixed rule, but pages you want AI tools to trust should be revisited every few months, even if it’s just a small factual update and a refreshed date. Stale content is one of the most common reasons businesses get overlooked.

Do I need new content, or can I fix what I already have?

Usually the latter. Most small business sites already have the right information, it’s just buried under company-first language instead of leading with a direct answer. Fixing structure gets you further than writing from scratch.
